Version 3.5, codenamed Shiretoko,[30] adds a variety of new features to Firefox. Initially numbered Firefox 3.1, Mozilla developers decided to change the numbering of the release to 3.5, in order to reflect a significantly greater scope of changes than originally planned.[31] These changes include support for the <video> and <audio> tags as defined in the HTML 5 specification, with a goal to offer video playback without being encumbered by patent issues associated with many video technologies.[32] Cross-site XMLHttpRequests (XHR), which can allow for more powerful web applications and an easier way to implement mashups, is also implemented in 3.5.[33] A new global JSON object contains native functions to efficiently and safely serialize and deserialize JSON objects, as specified by the ECMAScript 3.1 draft.[34] Full CSS 3 selector support has been added. Firefox 3.5 uses the Gecko 1.9.1 engine, which includes a few features that were not included in the 3.0 release. Multi-touch support was also added to the release, including gesture support like pinching for zooming and swiping for back and forward.[35] Version 3.5 also changes the default search engine in Russian language builds, using the popular Russian search engine Yandex rather than Google, after a survey of Russian Firefox users indicated they preferred Yandex.[36] Firefox 3.5 also features an updated logo.[37]
The Alpha 1 was released in late July 2008.[38] Alpha 2 was launched on September 6, 2008, adding new video support. TraceMonkey was added to enhance the speed of some JavaScript computations, similar to the V8 JavaScript engine in Google Chrome. Beta 1 was released on October 14, 2008,[39] and Beta 2 on December 8, 2008.[40] Beta 2 includes a Private Browsing feature which, when active, does not store any data revealing a user's visited sites on the hard drive.[41] Beta 3 was released on March 12, 2009.[42][43] Beta 4, the first to be labeled as version 3.5 was released on April 27, 2009.[44] Firefox 3.5 Preview (marked as 3.5b99) was released on June 8, 2009, to help Mozilla test the build before it became the Firefox 3.5 release candidate.[45] Firefox 3.5 Release Candidate 1 was released on June 16, 2009, the second on June 19, 2009, and the third on June 24, 2009.[46] The official release of Firefox 3.5 was on June 30, 2009
